You have 5 options for buying a new mattress.  Our recommendation is to buy online from one of the large and reputable online mattress stores like US Mattress.  You can get a good price if you comparison shop online and you also have the added benefit of having the mattress shipped right to your doorstep.  The disadvantage is that you cant test out mattress options online.  You can buy from a local mattress store and this is a good place to start your research because you can lay on and test different mattress options.  Usually prices are higher at local mattress stores but they do run close out sales and if you are patient you can find some good deals here.  Large general merchanidise stores like Walmart, Costco, and Sears also are very good options for buying mattresses.  They don’t usually have a big selection but they usually have good prices on the mattresses that they do carry.    Some of the specialty mattress companies, like Select Comfort and Duxiana, sell out of retail stores that only carry their brand. The advantage to the manufacturer is focus, but for the shopper the lack of choice does not facilitate cross-manufacturer comparison. The lack of choice can also result in pressure from the salesperson to choose from among the manufacturer's models. However, if you are interested in a specialty mattress that is only sold in this manner, you don't have much choice but to go to their store.  Finally, some brands sell direct to consumers.  You can buy direct from Tempur-pedic and their lower cost competitor Angel Beds for instance.
