Buying a new mattress pad or topper for your mattress can be a very good way to improve your sleep without the large price tag of a new mattress.  You should consider buying a mattress pad if your mattress is still in good shape but just doesn't offer the comfort that you desire or if you want to try something to reduce back aches and pain.  A mattress pad/topper is not a good idea if your mattress is too soft or if it is sagging - if you have either of those issues you need to buy a new mattress. 

In todays tough economic times the most important factor is making sure you are getting the absolute best deal on your mattress pad.    If you shop around you can find a good quality 2-3" memory foam, latex, or cotton mattress pad for around $50 in queen or even king size.  For a luxury 3-4" memory foam mattress pad/topper you should expect to pay between $150-200 for a queen or king size.
